Afterthirteenyearsinwhichhe acquiredallaspectsofthetrade,he foundedhisowncompany,,firstinFalaiseandtheninCaen.In 1894,hewonaGoldMedalattheUniversalExhibitionofLyon in1894withtheconstructionofanorganfortheNotre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church in Trouville.InParis,Cavaillé-Collwasincreasinglyweakandwaslookingfor asuccessor.Inordertosucceedhisformermaster,Mutin assembledmorethan200,000francsobtainedbythesaleof landbelongingtohiswifeEugénieCrespin,withanadditional 150,000francscontributedbyacertainÉdouardSales-Deschamps.OnJune18,1898,thecontractwassignedwith AristideCavaillé-Coll,CharlesMutinbecametheownerand manager of the Manufacture de Grandes-Orgues Cavaillé-Coll. HebecametreasureroftheFrenchSocietyofMusicologyin 1917andpublishedonhisinstrument,itshistoryinparticular. Hehadathisdisposalarichlibraryatthecompany.He reviewedthehistoryandtechniqueofhisinstrumentin75 pagesintheEncyclopediaofMusicLavignacandLaurencie.He alsowroteavastmanuscriptofonethousandpagesboundin twovolumesrelatingthehistory,techniqueandaestheticsof organbuilding.Butunfortunatelythetextremainedunfinished. In1924,AugusteConvers(1884-1976)boughttheManufacture d'orgueswhichthentooktheadministrativename"Cavaillé-Coll, Mutin, A. Convers et Cie". Thechef-d'oevreofConversisundoubtedlytheorganhebuiltin 1928forthe'PortiquesdesChamps-Élysées':aluxuryshopping arcadeingreymarble,withabouttwentyshopsandanorgan built into the wall.Itmaybeconsideredprobablyoneofthelastwitnessesofthe Frenchconcertorganbuildingoftheinterwarperiod,directly influencedbyAmericanorganbuildingatthattime.Itwasthe onlyinstrumentinEuropespeciallydesignedforadepartment store. Theorganwasdismantledin1937-1938whenthemallwas convertedintoarestaurantandacinema.ThecityofNoyon boughttheinstrumentandkeptitinthetriforiumofthe cathedral,havingnomoneytobuildanorgancase.Finally,after 40years,itwassoldin1988totheTempleProtestantof Amiens.Therebuildingwascompletedin2000(III/60).Ithas retaineditsoriginalpostsymphonicandorchestralcharacter.
