CreatedwhentheMosellewasstillFrench,it tookoffina"Reichsland"thatwasobviously moresensitivetotheGermanicrepertoire.Thetechniquesand "sizes"adopted,andthereforethecoloursallowedfor harmonization,areinspiredbyWalcker,Voit,Haasandthegreat German Romantics.Theadventurebetweenthetwobuildersbeganin1862,onthe constructionsiteofthegreatorganofStSulpice:(Jean-)Charles Haerpfer(photo,1835-1909,alreadytrainedwithSteinmeyer, WalckerandHaas)and(Nicolas-)EtienneDalstein(1834-1900, mainlyacarpenterbytraining)bothworkedforCavaillé-Collin Saint-Sulpice.In1863theydecidedtosetuptheirownbusiness, settlinginBoulay(Moselle).Thecompanywasfoundedin1863. Theduowasinfactatrio:therewasalsoJean-FrançoisDalstein (1826-?),abrotherofÉtienne.Charleswastheharmonist,with theDalsteinsbringingcapitalandentrepreneurialskills.They wonmanycontractsthankstoDr.AlbertSchweitzer,who promoted the firm and described it as a "faithful battle dog." TheDalstein-HaerpferHousewasapioneerofthe"Alsatian OrganReform"andthedesignoftheirorganshaditsrootsin boththeGermanandFrenchRomanticstyles.Schematically,the Dalstein-HaerpferorganswereamixtureofWalckerand Cavaillé-Coll.TheyequippedtheirorganswithGerman-designed windchests, sizes and stops; and French-style reeds.From1905,FrédéricHaerpfer(1879-1956)andPaulDalstein (1868-1926)graduallytookcontrolofthefactoryandin1918the companywasboughtbyFrédéricHaerpfer.TheMoselle companyhasdeliveredmorethan150instruments,mainlyin Moselle, Alsace and Germany. In1939,theoutbreakofwarhaltedtheexpansionofthe Manufacture,which,inordertomeetitsneeds,hadtotransform its organ building activity into coffin construction.In1946,thenameofthecompanywaschangedto"Manufacture LorrainedesGrandesOrguesHaerpfer-Erman",whenformer directorWalterHaerpfer(1909-1975)joinedforceswithPierre Erman(1913-1990).TheHaerpfer-ErmanHouserestoredand createdinstrumentsintheneoclassicalstyle,supportedby Marie-ClaireAlain.ThéoHaerpfer(1946-1999)directedthe ManufactureLorrainedesGrandesOrguesHaerpferfrom1978 until his death in 1999 and Pierre Erman retired in 1978. Intotal,thedynastybuiltorrestoredabout550instruments from 1863 to 1999.
