CharlesSpackmanBarker(1804-1879)wasborninBath (UK)andstudiedmedicineatfirst.Butsoonheturnedto theartoforganbuilding,whichhelearnedinLondon.He inventedthefamousBarker-machine,whichhebroughtto Parisin1837oninvitationofCavaillé-Coll.Hebecameco-directoroftheDaublaine-Callinetfirmin1841.HedirectedtherebuildingoftheorganofStEustachein1844 andtherenovationoftheorganofSaintSulpicein1846. TheDaublaine-CallinetfirmwasboughtbyPierre-AlexandreDucroquetin1845withwhomhebecame associated.In1855,thecompanywasboughtbyJoseph MerklinandBarkerholdhispositionuntil1857,whenhe startedhisowncompanywithhisformerforemanCharles Verschneider(1825-1865).HebuilttwoorgansinParis (Saint-Pierre-de-MontrougeandSaintAugustin).Healso renovatedtheorganofFrançois-HenriLesclopinNotre-Dame-des-Victoires in 1870. All have been modified.Barkerwasapioneerinexperimentingwithelectric keyboard action.HeleftFranceduringthewarof1870andmovedto Dublin,wherehebuilttheorgansofthecathedral.Hedied in 1879.
